About Us

The City of Miami Beach established an Art in Public Places program in 1984, following the examples successful programs in cities such as New York and Seattle. By ordinance, 1.5 percent of the hard costs of city-owned or public-private construction projects are set aside for “works of art in public spaces other than museums which enrich and give diversion to the public environment.”  To carry out this mandate, seven (7) citizens of Miami Beach are appointed by a majority of the entire City Commission, who possess a high degree of competence in evaluation of art history and architectural history, sculpture, painting, artistic structure design and other appropriate art media for display or integration in public places.
