    Miami Beach Rising Above: An Informative Session on Sea Level Rise and Miami Beach

    The City of Miami Beach and Florida International University (FIU) hosted a panel discussion about sea level rise and its global, national, and local implications. Multidisciplinary experts contextualized sea level rise and shared what the City of Miami Beach is doing to adapt to sea level rise. The session was moderated by the FIU school of Environment, Arts and Society (SEAS) Executive Director Evelyn Gaiser.

    Miami Beach Community Resiliency Summit 
    Friday, March 27, 2015 

    The City of Miami Beach celebrated its 100th birthday in March with a series of events throughout the City.  As part of the celebration, the City participated in a Community Resiliency Summit – Miami Beach Rising Above at the W Hotel. This summit brought together local city officials, scientists and educators. The summit, introduced by NBC’s Al Roker, highlighted Miami Beach’s current and future mitigation and adaptation strategies and how these strategies can be used by cities worldwide to adapt to the rising seas.

    Presentations were given by the Chamber of Commerce; Greater Miami & the Beaches Hotel Association; renowned academics from Harvard Graduate School of Design, University of Miami, and Florida International University; the CEO from Gore's Climate Reality Project; educational non-profits, and city officials. Morning sessions were followed by an environmental awards luncheon, which recognized excellence in environmental science, civic activism and education.
