Manager’s Office: City
Manager of the Year - The Florida League of Cities announced that Jorge
M. Gonzalez, City of Miami Beach has been selected as the City Manager of the
Year. 2002 Miami Dade County and City Management Association's
Leadership Award presented to City Manager Jorge M. Gonzalez. Office
of Budget and Performance Improvement (OBPI) City
Honored with Distinguished Budget Presentation Award - Government
Finance Officers Association (GFOA) awarded the City of Miami Beach its Distinguished
Budget Presentation Award for its budget
for the years 2003, 2004 and 2005. This reflects the commitment of the
governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.
Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and
provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America. Office
of Communications:
2005 Savvy Award for the "Best Citizen Participation Program"
for the Vote Miami Beach campaign. 2003
Savvy Award from the City, County Communications and Marketing Association for
the creative marketing and communications efforts honoring the City’s website.
2002 Savvy Award from the City, County Communications
and Marketing Association for the creative marketing and communications efforts
of the Veterans Day Benefit Concert with NSYNC. Tourism
and Cultural Development Department: Miami Beach’s Convention
and Tourism Liaison and Chief of Protocol Michael Aller received the 2003 Travel
& Tourism Hall of Fame Award from the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce.
Building
Department: American
Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) awarded Syed Mehdi Ashraf the 2003 Florida
Section Government Engineer of the Year.
Neighborhood Services:
President’s Award from Participate America (2002). The
City of Miami Beach was the only governmental entity in the country to receive
an award for their outstanding civic participation. Procurement:
Outstanding Agency Accreditation
Award from the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing (2002). The
City was the 40th award recipient in the agency’s 56-year history and currently
the only South Florida department to hold such an accreditation. Property
Management: TOBY Award from Building Owners and Manager’s
Association (2002). The City was awarded the TOBY, the highest award
given for excellence in commercial real estate management, in both the local and
southeastern United States regional competitions. In winning the regional
award, the City placed in the top six governmental property management organizations
in the entire US and Canada. Public Works/Transportation/Concurrency
Management Division: 2002, Award of Merit from the
America Planning Association (2002). For the successful creation of the Miami
Beach Transportation Concurrency Management Areas, a coordinated approach to land
use and transportation development. City
of Miami Beach "City Hall Building" regional award (Southeast US)
in the "Government Office Building" category, from the Building Owners
and Managers Association (BOMA). Property
Management received the "2001 Energy Project of the Year"
award from the National Association of Energy Engineers for our work on energy
conservation performance based contracts. So far, over $2,500,000 of energy saving
projects, including retrofits and equipment have been put under these contracts
by Property Management with the entire amount paid for through guaranteed energy
savings. International Building Owners

of Miami Beach, 1999, honors the City’s continuous efforts in expanding its urban
forest canopy by planting shade and palm trees and its dedication to beautification
through landscaping.
Miami Beach Convention Center (SMG): Prime
Site Award from Facilities & Destinations Magazine (2002). For the fifth
consecutive year for exemplary service. Economic Development: Roy
F. Kenzie Awards, Florida Redevelopment Association, 2000, City of Miami Beach,
"Outstanding Rehabilitation, Renovation or Reuse Building Project" for
the St. Moritz Hotel project and "Management Programs and Creative Partnerships"
for the Loews Miami Beach Convention Center Hotel project.
Police
Department: Dade
Partners Award, Police Department, 2000, for the partnership with Feinberg
Fisher/Cool School Project. Governors
Corporate Honor Roll, Police Department, 2000, Governor Bush’s award for a
mentoring initiative at Miami Beach Senior High School.
Planning
Department: Florida
Successful Community Award, 1999, Planning Department, for a project or a
community that shows extraordinary effort to create a special place to live. Official
Project of Save America's Treasures, National Trust for Historic Preservation,
1999, Community/Economic Development Department, Historic Preservation of Old
City Hall. 1000 Friends of Florida,
1999, as one of the state's leaders in growth management recognizing communities
that enhance Florida's quality of life through smarter planning for the future.
Fire
Department: Life Safety
Achievement Award (2003). The Fire Department
received this award from the Residential Safety Institute.
