Date: December 17, 2002City Opens Miami Beach Golf Club – Its Newest Star Attraction
With 128 acres of lush fairways and perfectly manicured greens, Miami Beach Golf Club offers a world-class challenge in the heart of historic Miami Beach. The opening of the new Miami Beach Golf Club will elevate the state of golf on the Beach to a whole new level.
Celebrate a golf revival at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, December 17 at 10:00 a.m. on the first tee. Miami Beach Golf Club is the premiere golf destination in the heart of historic Miami Beach, located just minutes from luxurious hotels, restaurants, shops and clubs. The Club opens for public play on Saturday, December 21, 2002.
The newly constructed Miami Beach Golf Club, formerly Bayshore Golf Course, has undergone $6.5 million in major improvements. The new golf course includes new tees, greens, fairways, cart paths, bunkers, irrigation, landscaping and lake treatments.
The new Miami Beach Golf Club's course features an 18-hole, Par 72, 6,800 yards from the back tees. The new environmentally friendly and exceptionally playable Paspalum turf combined with the world-class course design by architectural firm Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest and Associates guarantees a challenge, even for a pro. The 570-yard Par 5 12th forces one to confront a bunker-enveloped tee shot and a follow-up shot into a steeply sloping green, and the 340-yard Par 4 13th puts club selection at a premium with its thickly framed fairway. There is also the signature 17th; a 183-yard Par 3 that literally throws caution to the prevailing wind, it offers up an abundance of water before arriving at a tightly guarded green. All in all, it is a course every bit as alluring, unique and unforgettable as the City that surrounds it.
The new Paspalum turf is not only environmentally friendly but its play is exceptional. Miami Beach Golf Course is the only fully Paspalum golf course on the east coast. The South Florida Water Management District awarded the City a grant in the amount of $226,095 to off-set the cost of the use of Paspalum. It is estimated that there will be a 25 percent reduction in the use of fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides. Estimated water savings in dollars based on 83,500,000 gallons at $2.26, per 1,000 gallons, equals $188,710. Its tolerance to salt water allows for the eradication of weeds using the brackish water rather than herbicides that are more to the environment. Its deep root system makes it more drought tolerant than other southern turf grasses. The new system will reduce dependency on fresh water by 76%. The majority of water will now come from the 30 acres of inter-connected lakes.
The club's amenities will be housed in a temporary facility until a new clubhouse is completed next year. When completed, it is anticipated the total improvements to the course and clubhouse will be valued at an estimated $9.5 - $10 million. The former Bayshore Golf Course closed on October 1, 2001 to begin the complete reconstruction.
