Miami
Beach Commission to Make Decision on the Bay Link Transportation Corridor
Project
Miami Beach, FL
– The City of Miami Beach will hold a Special Commission Meeting to
select a Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA) for the Miami Beach segment
of a proposed Miami - Miami Beach Transportation Corridor, known as
Bay Link. The selected LPA, if any, will determine the transit technology
and route for the Bay Link in Miami Beach. The Special Commission
meeting will be held on Monday, September 8, 2003, at 5:00 p.m., in
the Commission Chambers at City Hall, 1700 Convention Center Drive,
third floor.
The meeting will
include a brief presentation to clarify questions raised in the last
Commission meeting, and to provide the findings as a result of the
Evaluation of Rapid Transit Options, Phase I - South Beach, performed
by HDR, Inc., the City-hired consultants.
The City of Miami
Beach recently hired a consultant to evaluate options for modes of
rapid transit and obtain input from the community to guide the City
in developing a recommendation to the City Commission. A report was
presented to the City Commission in July. The report is available
on the City's Web site at http://www.miamibeachfl.gov/newcity/press/press03/baylink.asp.
Last year, Miami-Dade
County voters approved the People's Transportation Plan that included
plans to build rapid transit lines to Miami Beach and other areas
by levying a 1/2 percent sales surtax. The Miami-Dade Metropolitan
Planning Organization is awaiting a decision by the Miami Beach City
Commission on how to proceed with the Miami Beach portion of the plan.
