Miami Beach Blitzes Neighborhood with Trees
-- Arbor Day Celebration --
Miami Beach – The City of Miami Beach, in conjunction with the City’s Beautification Committee, Boys and Girls Clubs of Miami, Inc., Log Cabin Enterprises, Teen Job Corp., and the North Beach Development Corporation are planning a “Neighborhood Tree Blitz” on Arbor Day 2003 (Thursday, April 24, 2003.) The City has selected a small area within the Biscayne Beach neighborhood and mobilized resources to improve it. The program will be funded by the City’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program as part of its annual celebration of Community Development Week (April 21 to April 27, 2003.)
The “Blitz” involves activities in two areas:
-
April 24, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon – A Park Is Born (Park rededication at City-owned lot near Crespi Blvd. and 81st Street). A new park has been designed to provide beautification of the lot where the Tatum Waterway footbridge is located. Children from Biscayne Elementary School will be at hand to help re-dedicate this park.
-
April 24, 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. – A Tree for Every Child (Tree Planting on 79th Terrace between Hawthorne and Crespi in Biscayne Beach) The City will purchase shade trees and give them away free to property owners. The City will also provide landscaping experts to help design landscaping around the trees and to plant them in the front yards along the street. This will provide shade for energy conservation and beautification in this neighborhood because the streets and sidewalks are too narrow to plant trees in the public right-of-way.
“The CDBG program has been instrumental in the revitalization of Miami Beach. For the past several years, the largest allotment of CDBG funds has been channeled to projects that provide citywide services and programs, resulting in economic revitalization that has impacted all residents of the areas,” said Miami Beach City Manager Jorge Gonzalez. “By focusing in specific areas, like this new initiative, we are able to show results in a very short time.”
Miami Beach residents are invited to participate in both events. For more information, contact Joanna Revelo, director, Housing and Community Development at 305-673-7260.
