Enrollment Opens for City’s Neighborhood Leadership Academy
-- Fall Classes Begin September 22 --
Miami Beach, FL – The City of Miami Beach Neighborhood Leadership Academy opens enrollment for its spring classes. The Academy is an interactive civic and public information program designed for residents of Miami Beach. The no-tuition Academy offers Miami Beach residents an opportunity to learn more about City departments and their services in an interesting, fun and interactive experience. Residents enrolled in the 12-week Academy will have an opportunity to meet the people responsible for providing City services, gain insight into how the City works, and understand the role of each department. In addition, the Academy affords the City staff an opportunity to learn about residents’ needs as their customers and consumers of city services.
Enrollment to the Academy is limited. Applicant must be at least 18 years of age to participate in the program. Applications will be accepted until Friday, September 12 or until the class is full. Applications are available online (http://www.miamibeachfl.gov/newcity/neighborhoods/register_leadership.asp), at the City Hall’s Answer Center, or by calling 305-673-7000, extension 6977 for more information.
“Through this program, you will be able to increase your understanding of the city and enhance your abilities to actively participate in many of the important decision-making processes that affect your neighborhood. Participating in your local government will also assist us in understanding your neighborhood needs and priorities. Additionally, it is a wonderful opportunity to meet and interact with the city employees that are responsible for delivering services to you,” said Miami Beach City Manager Jorge M. Gonzalez.
The 12-week Neighborhood Leadership Academy is fashioned after a traditional learning environment with two-hour evening sessions once a week beginning at 6:00 p.m. The classes are held weekly in the Miami Beach Convention Center and are informal and small, allowing for communication between instructor and participants. Students also evaluate each class.
The curriculum is presented by individual City of Miami Beach departments and/or divisions and includes an overview of each department or division’s responsibilities and the services they provide. The fall semester schedule will include:
