Miami Beach Commission on the Status of Women
Seeks Nominations for Women Worth Knowing Award 2004

Miami Beach, FL – The Miami Beach Commission on the Status of Women seeks nominations for the Women Worth Knowing Awards in March 2004. Detailed nominations must be received by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, December 5, 2003.

Detailed nominations can be submitted to Women Worth Knowing by fax to 305-673-7073, via email to webmaster@miamibeachfl.gov, and/or by mail to City of Miami Beach, Att: City Manager’s Office, Women Worth Knowing, 1700 Convention Center Drive, Miami Beach, FL, 33139.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Miami Beach Commission on the Status of Women’s Women Worth Knowing program honors four local women for their contributions to the community. The Commission seeks nominations for women who are actively involved in fostering positive change in the community through involvement in civic and/or professional activities and meet the prerequisite and qualifications. Nominee shall either a) be a resident of the City (for a minimum of two years); or b) have demonstrated ownership/interest for a minimum of two years in a business established in the City. The nominee has to be involved in activities for the betterment of the community on a local, state or national level; have interests and activities reach beyond the home and the workplace; and share her professional expertise and experience with those in need.

The Miami Beach Commission on the Status of Women serves as an advisory capacity to the City Commission. The purpose of the Commission is to support efforts for economic, political, and social equality and opportunity for all women, with special emphasis on the needs of women on Miami Beach.

Procedures and Criteria for Nominating and Selecting Recipients

The following program criteria and procedures for selecting recipients for the annual "Women Worth Knowing" Awards Program have been adopted by the Committee. Prerequisites, qualifications of nominees and general requirements of the program are listed below:

Part I - Prerequisites

  1. Nominee shall either a) be a resident of the City (for a minimum of two years); or b) have demonstrated ownership/interest for a minimum of two years in a business established in the City.
  2. No current member of the Miami Beach Commission on the Status of Women shall be elected to “Women Worth Knowing.”
  3. A maximum number of (4) four awards should be presented annually.

Part II - Qualifications

Selection should be made based on one or any combination of the following:

  1. Nominee is involved in activities for the betterment of the community on a local, state or national level.
  2. Nominee's interests and activities reach beyond the home and the workplace.
  3. Nominee shares professional expertise and experience with those in need.

Part III - General Requirements

  1. All nominations should be based on Commission member reports and a detailed biography or resume.
  2. Nominees should be notified sufficiently in advance of the awards ceremony, to prepare a short acknowledgement response.
  3. The selection process should be completed by January of each year.
