Master Meters Enhance Parking Payment Options Around Lincoln Road – On December 8, the City will begin transitioning to multi-space meter stations (aka, master meter or pay and display) in the Lincoln Road lots and area to enhance customer service levels by providing customers with more payment options.

How many times have you been in front of a meter without any change or parking card? With the master meter, this problem is resolved. The new system offers multiple payment choices: coin, bills, credit card, or the Miami Beach Parking Smart Card.

Ten-time Olympic Medallist Gary Hall Jr Visits with Young Miami Beach Swimmers - Ten-time Olympic medallist and Miami Beach resident Gary Hall Jr. joins young Miami Beach Parks & Recreation (Seahawks) swim teams (ages 5 - 18) to inspire and provide some swimming tips. He will passionately share his love for the sport of swimming and his experiences as a diabetes patient with children, parents, coaches and media.

Construction Begins on New Miami Beach Fire Station – The City of Miami Beach begins construction on its new fire station with a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, October 13 at 1:00 p.m. at 6880 Indian Creek Drive, Miami Beach.

Miami Beach Residents Get Free Access to Wolfsonian – Miami Beach residents have free access to the modern arts at the Wolfsonian – Florida International University Museum. The Museum, in conjunction with the City of Miami Beach, is offering free admission to Miami Beach residents with valid photo I.D. The free admission is made possible by a $176,000 grant the museum received from the City of Miami Beach for the construction of the new museum store and café. The free admission is good for the next five years; expires 2009.

Couple riding motorcycleIt’ll Be Business as Usual on Washington Avenue -- Campaign Launches Major Street Improvement Project – The City of Miami Beach is about to undertake one of its largest street improvement projects to date at one of the City’s most popular destinations – Washington Avenue; as part of its “Planned Progress.” The approximately $12 million project will enhance both the vehicular and pedestrian experience on this important corridor from 16 to 5 streets. Project plans include significant drainage improvements, roadway resurfacing, new curbs, sidewalks, trees, and pedestrian scale street lights. Work is expected to begin the summer of 2004 and conclude in 2006.

County’s Annual Chlorination Process of Water Begins -- Public Advisory – The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department will temporarily use a free chlorine treatment at each of its regional water treatment facilities from November 1 through 14, 2004 that will provide a somewhat stronger disinfection process than the combined chlorine treatment which is normally used.

Join the Hands on Miami Beach Team – The City's Volunteer Network, a program that supports and promotes volunteerism throughout the city, has partnered with Hands on Miami to work on four projects on Saturday, November 6. Over 600 volunteers are expected to gather to clean-up North Shore Open Space Park; paint the beach boardwalk from 46th Street southward; sweep the 5th Street Alley; and replanting South Pointe Park. Miami Beach Offers Early Voters Incentives – In an effort to encourage voters to vote early, the City of Miami Beach is offering those early voters some incentives.

Vote Miami Beach Campaign – In an effort to increase voter registration and participation, the City of Miami Beach launches Vote Miami Beach to create and stimulate awareness among Miami Beach residents about voting. The incentive program offers Miami Beach voters a discount at local participating businesses.

Miami Beach Rocks to Encourage Voters at Schools & Parks -- As Part of Voter’s Registration Drive Campaign – In the continued effort to increase voter registration and participation, the City of Miami Beach’s Vote Miami Beach campaign is entertaining potential new voters at area schools and after-school programs. Local bands have joined the City’s effort to encourage voter registration amongst school-age children’s parents and to emphasize the importance of democratic process to the children.

Miami Beach Provides Relief to Hurricane Victims – Hurricane relief collections are being accepted at all Miami Beach Fire Station locations, in conjunction with the American Red Cross.

Art Exhibit Kicks Off Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations  – The Miami Beach Hispanic Heritage Month celebration kicks off on Friday, September 17 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at City Hall’s Fourth Floor Gallery with the opening reception of an art exhibit featuring Hispanic artists whose work goes beyond the boundaries of day to day life. The art exhibit is one of several cultural “Viernes Sociales” events that are planned during Hispanic Heritage Month.

Book Drive Celebrates Literacy during Hispanic Heritage Month – The City of Miami Beach Hispanic Affairs Committee (HAC) is sponsoring a book collection of new and/or used books to promote literacy during Hispanic Heritage Month. Books will be collected through October 15, 2004 at the following Miami Beach locations: City Hall, 1700 Convention Center Drive.; Hispanic Community Center,1701 Normandy Drive; Ayuda, 7118 Byron Avenue; and at Jacobo’s Watch Repair, 302 Lincoln Road.

In July of 2004, the City Commission adopted legislation that affords certain rights and benefits to qualified long-term committed relationships that have registered with the City of Miami Beach. Partners need not be Miami Beach residents. Registration is available Monday - Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Miami Beach City Hall, City Clerk's Office, first floor. MTV Video Music Awards Weekend 2004 (Acrobat) - The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) Show is being held at the American Airlines Arena on Sunday, August, 29, 2004. This event will bring national and international attention, as well as thousands of visitors to our beautiful City. Initial projections indicate that hotel occupancy is expected to be at or near capacity throughout the weekend and a number of Miami Beach hotels and nightclubs will serve as focal points for events and parties related to the MTV VMAs.

StudentEnrollment Opens for City’s Fall Neighborhood Leadership Academy -- Fall Classes Begin September 13 – The City of Miami Beach Neighborhood Leadership Academy opens enrollment for its fall classes. The Academy is an interactive civic and public information program designed for residents of Miami Beach. The no-tuition Academy offers Miami Beach residents an opportunity to learn more about City departments and their services in an interesting, fun and interactive experience.

Miami Beach Signage Designs Presented for Final Approval – Public Input Sought - The City of Miami Beach has engaged the services of nationally recognized consultant, Hillier, to plan and design a Way-finding and Identity Signage System. During the past year, Hillier has completed the first phase of planning the signage system, and has received approval of the schematic designs. The City is now in the process of reviewing the final plans for sign design, locations and messages.

There will be two public preview presentations of the proposed signage designs and sign locations. Both presentations will be held on Monday, August 16 at 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. in the Mayor's Conference Room, fourth floor, City Hall. There will be a brief slide presentation by the consultant, followed by a question and answer session. The proposed sign designs will be presented for final approval by the Design Review Board and the Historic Preservation Board at a public hearing on Tuesday, August 17 at 8:30 a.m. in the Commission Chambers.

Miami Beach Hosts Workshops for Seniors -- Topics: Medicare and Elderly Service Delivery -- The City of Miami Beach, along with the Department of Elder Affairs of Florida and the Alliance for Aging, is hosting workshops and a hearing to inform seniors about Medicare discount cards and to obtain input on the delivery of services to seniors. The workshops and the hearing are free and of interest to any senior citizen, person caring for an elder, or a family member of a senior on Medicare.

City of Miami Beach Launches Online Building Permit Processing -- Provides 24/7 Self-Service Access via the Internet -- The City of Miami Beach announces the launch of an online service designed to provide increasingly higher, more efficient levels of customer service by streamlining the building permit process. Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the online building permitting gives building professionals and Miami Beach residents self-service, online access to permit information and services.

Miami Beach Honors Women Worth Knowing 2004 -- As Part of Women’s History Month – In celebration of Women’s History Month, the City of Miami Beach Commission on the Status of Women will honor local women for their contributions to the community in a ceremony on Thursday, March 18 at 6:00 p.m. at The Palms Hotel, 3025 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach. The Women Worth Knowing program will celebrate the achievements of Ronnie Singer, Ada Llerandi, Patricia Silverman, and Marjorie York. Celebrating 30 Years of Inspiring Community, Achieving Success – For 30 years, the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program in Miami Beach has provided broad-based community services to meet the physical, economic and social needs of the City and to its residents. From hot meals for the elderly to neighborhood street improvements, from childcare services to vocational tuition waivers, services and programs funded through Community Development Block Grant funds have been many. This year, National Community Development Week will be held on the week of April 12 - 16.

Miami Beach Seeks Community Heroes Nominations – The City of Miami Beach is seeking nominations for the fifth annual Community Heroes Awards, a program to commemorate the achievements of individuals and organizations benefiting the residents of Miami Beach. It is an annual awards program with a celebration that coincides with the Community Development Week celebration in Miami Beach. This year, National Community Development Week will be held on the week of April 12 - 16.

Miami Beach Distributes Free Water Conservation Kits -- Observing World Water Day - March 22, 2004 - The average Floridian uses 175 gallons of water per day -- 65 gallons more than the U.S. per capita average. By changing a few habits and using water saving devices, the amount of water used can be reduced. In observance of World Water Day 2004, the City of Miami Beach is offering free water conservation kits and tips on how to prevent and reduce wasteful use of water resources in the home.

On Tuesday, March 9, 2004, the City of Miami Beach held a Special Election at the time of the Presidential Preference Primary election; the City presented seven of its ballot questions to the City's voters at this time.
