The City of Miami Beach Cultural Affairs Division manages the Cultural Affairs Program and the Art in Public Places program:

Art in Public Places

Art in Public Places (AiPP) is a City of Miami Beach program for curating and commissioning public art. The program was created in 1984, with its ordinance adopted in 1995. The AiPP program allocates funds totaling 1.5% of hard costs for City projects and joint private/public projects. Appointed by the City Commission, the Art in Public Places Committee’s seven members serve in an advisory capacity to the Mayor and City Commission. Artworks commissioned by the City of Miami Beach’s public art program add value to the art collection, attract international attention, and celebrate the diversity and heritage of Miami Beach.

The City of Miami Beach’s growing public art collection includes works by renowned artists, such as: Charles O. Perry, Roy Lichtenstein, Roberto Juarez, Ellen Lanyon, Jim Morrison, Carlos Alves, Connie Lloveras, Garren Owens, Dan Graham, Wendy Wischer, Tobias Rehberger, Kevin Arrow, Joep van Lieshout, Sarah Morris, Joseph Kosuth, Ellen Harvey, Bill Fontana, Elmgreen & Dragset, and Franz Ackermann.

Cultural Affairs Program

The Cultural Arts Program within the Division of Cultural Affairs serves as an invaluable resource for the Miami Beach community and beyond. Working closely with the Cultural Arts Council (the advisory board which was founded in 1997) the Cultural Arts Program sustains, develops, and supports the arts in Miami Beach for the enjoyment, education, enrichment, and benefit of residents, and visitors.

Since 1997, the City of Miami Beach has awarded approximately $18 million to over 100 nonprofit arts groups through an annual, competitive Cultural Grants Program. Recent additions to the program include a cultural facilities management initiative administered under the Cultural Affairs Program to insure the effective management of the City-owned Colony Theatre in partnership with Miami New Drama and The Bass Museum. Also included is an extensive arts education program developed in partnership with Arts for Learning/Miami which assists in educating and developing young audiences and lovers of culture for today and tomorrow.
