The couple was inspired by events in 1940\, during World War II\, when the Dutch Consul-General in Kaunas (Lithuania)\, Jan Zwartendijk\, took personal action and began issuing visas for the island of Curaçao in the Dutch Caribbean for the Jewish community trapped in Kaunas. In only two weeks\, he issued 2\,345 visas and saved the lives of more than 6\,000 people. The Japanese consul of Kaunas\, Sugihara\, likewise issued visas that enabled the people to travel through Russia and reach Japan by boat.  In her black and white\, intuitive photography Lansink traces the feeling of everyday saviors like Zwartendijk through an intuitive view of Kaunas and Japan. With his poetry Van Hulst muses on the potential of our human existence: we are all afraid and alone\, together. Gently\, they urge for kindness. \nThis exhibition is generously supported by Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York | DutchCulture USA and The Netherland-America Foundation. After her own relocation experience\, Silvia realized the difficulties her parents had faced\, arriving in a new country with a completely different culture and language. \nIn this series\, her parents are presented with others of the community enjoying life\, meeting in their homes\, and dressing up for dances\, celebrations\, weddings\, and Carnival. Inspired by old photographs from the 1950’s and 1960’s\, Silvia chose unique moments from her own family and friend’s stories to illustrate Venezuela’s vibrant Jewish community. \nJewish settlers from Curaçao arrived in Venezuela in 1824\, established themselves in the city of Santa Ana de Coro. Unfortunately\, in 1854\, most of them were expelled back to Curaçao. In 1919\, the Israelite Association of Venezuela was created to coalesce the country’s scattered Jewish community. In the 1920s and 1930s\, the Jewish population expanded with arrivals from North Africa and Europe. By the 1950s\, there were over 6\,000 Jews in Venezuela\, many who\, like Silvia’s parents\, had come fleeing the war in Europe. By 1970\, there were over 15\,000 Jews\, most of them living in and around Caracas. Over 20\,000 Jews lived there in the mid-1990s\, but today less than 7\,000 remain. \nTwo organizations provide services to Venezuelan Jews\, the Asociación Israelita de Venezuela (Sephardic) and the Unión Israelita de Caracas (Azkenazi). Each offers their members assistance with religious\, kashrut\, cultural\, and funerary observances. They have united\, as few communities have done\, in common objectives such as education with the Colegio Moral y Luces\, Hebraica social and sports clubs\, Yajad social aid\, health\, identification with Israel\, and representation before government agencies in the Confederación de Asociaciones Israelitas de Venezuela (CAIV). This joint collaboration represents a unique example within the Jewish Diaspora. Featuring site-specific installations by Beatriz Chachamovits\, Mira Lehr\, and Lauren Shapiro\, the exhibition brings together works by local Miami artists that reflect on climate change and human impact on our oceans\, coral reefs\, and rapidly shifting environment.  \nWorking across installation and performance\, Chachamovits’ draws attention to the effects of ocean acidification in her ephemeral installations of unfired clay sculptures submerged in water. Along with extreme temperature fluctuations\, ocean acidification can cause coral reefs to dissolve and disintegrate\, significantly impacting reefs across Florida. The resulting works\, when activated\, expose the public to different stages of ocean acidification and its effects on coral.  \nShapiro’s practice too experiments with art’s possibility to affect change and cultivate a broad awareness of our environment. Working alongside ecologists to understand and narrate nature\, Shapiro merges craft\, science and technology to document disappearing ecosystems as sculptural ceramic archives. \nWhereas Chachamovits and Shapiro consider environmental threats to marine ecosystems\, Lehr’s immersive installations pay homage to mangrove trees\, which protect coastlines against hurricanes and serve as nurseries for aquatic life. Threatened by rising sea levels\, urban development\, and human activities\, mangroves in Florida\, while protected by law\, continue to fall victim to deforestation. \nUtilizing different media to convey the elegance of our aquatic ecosystems and cultivate a broad awareness of their delicacy\, the participating artists draw attention to the environmental challenges we face in Florida and the actions we can take to reverse them. Fragile Beauty is a celebration of nature\, yet at the same time a call for awareness and action to preserve it for generations to come. He mines the history of ceramics to create artwork with contemporary urgency\, turning luxurious porcelain forms—often used to mark major events or memorialize monarchies and political leaders—into agents of change and disruption. At The Wolfsonian\, Lugo looks to the museum’s significant collection of 19th- and 20th-century European and American ceramics\, producing new work inspired by these objects but depicting the histories\, experiences\, and heroes of Black and Brown communities so often ignored by the historical record. \nOn the exterior of the museum\, Lugo brings his characteristic style and approach to Miami’s own underexplored stories\, designing a mural that commemorates the city’s Caribbean roots while weaving in his own family history. Connecting the gallery installation to the street\, and the Wolfsonian collection to the lives of present-day Miamians\, Lugo invites visitors to consider the intersection of race\, politics\, and memory in the built world around them. \nStreet Shrines is made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts\, and Funding Arts Network. Mambo\, cha-cha-cha\, and salsa. Cuba’s rich and diverse culture delighted American audiences in the 20th century. From tourist-packed Havana cabarets\, to New York City dance halls\, to the silver screen of Hollywood films\, Afro-Cuban rhythms surged in popularity between the 1930s and ’60s\, rewriting the history of American music and dance. American jazz and big band swing\, in turn\, greatly influenced music in Cuba\, where new hybrid genres added polyrhythmic African elements to the mix. Turn the Beat Around replays this artistic exchange\, illustrating how musicians of both nations produced new musical forms by riffing off their neighbors. Showcasing posters\, record and sheet music covers\, film clips\, and audio from the era\, the exhibition charts the explosion of collaborative creativity driven by Hollywood musicals\, American dance studios\, and Cuban performers\, bringing to life the musical fusion found between cultures. \nWe gratefully acknowledge Vicki Gold Levi for her donation of objects that inspired this exhibition. This individualized experience places emphasis on technique\, concept development\, and maintaining a polished sketchbook and portfolio. \nThe Teen Studio Art Sessions are aimed at both high school and college prospective students. The teaching artist will coach students and provide individual instruction for optimal portfolio and audition preparedness. Additional private classes can also be arranged if interested. \nArtist-grade art materials are included with the cost of the class\, but we can also provide a shopping list for those that want to keep their own materials. \nREGISTRATION FEES\n$30 per class for museum members (Family/Dual & above)\n$35 per class for not-yet-members\nSign up for a bundle of 5 and save 10% (bundles are sold via phone or in person\, please call to register) \n786-477-6003 or email education@thebass.org with any questions\n* No class on March 22 due to our Spring Break Art Camp URL:https://www.miamibeachfl.gov/event/teen-studio-art-sessions-at-the-bass-museum/ LOCATION:The Bass Museum of Art\, 2100 Collins Avenue\, Miami Beach\, 33139\, United States CATEGORIES:Arts & Culture ORGANIZER;CN="The%20Bass":MAILTO:info@thebass.org END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20230125T180000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20230125T220000 DTSTAMP:20240328T094313 CREATED:20230114T044841Z LAST-MODIFIED:20230125T075707Z UID:240815-1674669600-1674684000@www.miamibeachfl.gov SUMMARY:Open Air Tango on Lincoln Road DESCRIPTION:Every 4th Wednesday of the Month — November 2022 through May 2023 \n845 Lincoln Rd.\, Miami Beach\, FL 33139 \n  \nTango Class\, 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. \nOpen Milonga\, 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. \n  URL:https://www.miamibeachfl.gov/event/open-air-tango-on-lincoln-road/ LOCATION:Lincoln Road\, 1111 Lincoln Road\, Miami Beach\, FL\, 33139\, United States CATEGORIES:Arts & Culture ORGANIZER;CN="Lincoln%20Road":MAILTO:info@LincolnRoadMall.com END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20230125T183000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20230125T213000 DTSTAMP:20240328T094313 CREATED:20221226T232917Z LAST-MODIFIED:20230125T075709Z UID:237294-1674671400-1674682200@www.miamibeachfl.gov SUMMARY:In Studio with Oolite: Painting with Acrylic\, Oil\, or Watercolor DESCRIPTION:Achieving self-expression is always the goal behind every art practice. If you have never tried painting before\, you are seeking to fine-tune your painting skills to the next level or perhaps you are looking to experiment with a new painting medium\, then this painting course is for you. The small class differentiated instructional approach is designed for beginner through intermediate artists to maximize one-on-one learning opportunities. \nIn this course\, students are encouraged and supported to use various painting mediums\, including watercolor\, acrylic\, and/or oil painting. Each medium has its temperament and mastering each requires an understanding of their nuanced differences and rules. This class covers color theory\, composition\, painting techniques\, and the use of tools and materials\, as well as exploring formal strategies for organizing the elements of art using the principles of design. \nBeginner painting students will start by understanding color theory\, the color wheel\, and how artists use both to mix colors and organize color schemes correctly. Students will also learn the proper use of different mediums\, painting brushes\, painting\, and mixing palettes. Beginner students are encouraged to begin with figurative painting and will attempt to complete a landscape\, a still-life\, and/or a portrait painting using photographic references. \nIntermediate students will work on expanding their visual vocabulary and technical skills to improve their work by considering both the formal and contextual dimensions of their work. Each student will be encouraged to explore and experiment as a means of developing their creative voices. Individual instruction\, demonstrations\, exercises\, and feedback will assist each artist in the development of a unique body of work. \nMaterials are not included; you’ll receive the materials list upon registration.
