Featuring site-specific installations by Beatriz Chachamovits\, Mira Lehr\, and Lauren Shapiro\, the exhibition brings together works by local Miami artists that reflect on climate change and human impact on our oceans\, coral reefs\, and rapidly shifting environment.  \nWorking across installation and performance\, Chachamovits’ draws attention to the effects of ocean acidification in her ephemeral installations of unfired clay sculptures submerged in water. Along with extreme temperature fluctuations\, ocean acidification can cause coral reefs to dissolve and disintegrate\, significantly impacting reefs across Florida. The resulting works\, when activated\, expose the public to different stages of ocean acidification and its effects on coral.  \nShapiro’s practice too experiments with art’s possibility to affect change and cultivate a broad awareness of our environment. Working alongside ecologists to understand and narrate nature\, Shapiro merges craft\, science and technology to document disappearing ecosystems as sculptural ceramic archives. \nWhereas Chachamovits and Shapiro consider environmental threats to marine ecosystems\, Lehr’s immersive installations pay homage to mangrove trees\, which protect coastlines against hurricanes and serve as nurseries for aquatic life. Threatened by rising sea levels\, urban development\, and human activities\, mangroves in Florida\, while protected by law\, continue to fall victim to deforestation. \nUtilizing different media to convey the elegance of our aquatic ecosystems and cultivate a broad awareness of their delicacy\, the participating artists draw attention to the environmental challenges we face in Florida and the actions we can take to reverse them. Fragile Beauty is a celebration of nature\, yet at the same time a call for awareness and action to preserve it for generations to come. He mines the history of ceramics to create artwork with contemporary urgency\, turning luxurious porcelain forms—often used to mark major events or memorialize monarchies and political leaders—into agents of change and disruption. At The Wolfsonian\, Lugo looks to the museum’s significant collection of 19th- and 20th-century European and American ceramics\, producing new work inspired by these objects but depicting the histories\, experiences\, and heroes of Black and Brown communities so often ignored by the historical record. \nOn the exterior of the museum\, Lugo brings his characteristic style and approach to Miami’s own underexplored stories\, designing a mural that commemorates the city’s Caribbean roots while weaving in his own family history. Connecting the gallery installation to the street\, and the Wolfsonian collection to the lives of present-day Miamians\, Lugo invites visitors to consider the intersection of race\, politics\, and memory in the built world around them. \nStreet Shrines is made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts\, and Funding Arts Network. Mambo\, cha-cha-cha\, and salsa. Cuba’s rich and diverse culture delighted American audiences in the 20th century. From tourist-packed Havana cabarets\, to New York City dance halls\, to the silver screen of Hollywood films\, Afro-Cuban rhythms surged in popularity between the 1930s and ’60s\, rewriting the history of American music and dance. American jazz and big band swing\, in turn\, greatly influenced music in Cuba\, where new hybrid genres added polyrhythmic African elements to the mix. Turn the Beat Around replays this artistic exchange\, illustrating how musicians of both nations produced new musical forms by riffing off their neighbors. Showcasing posters\, record and sheet music covers\, film clips\, and audio from the era\, the exhibition charts the explosion of collaborative creativity driven by Hollywood musicals\, American dance studios\, and Cuban performers\, bringing to life the musical fusion found between cultures. \nWe gratefully acknowledge Vicki Gold Levi for her donation of objects that inspired this exhibition.
