On view beginning September 21\, 2023\, the exhibition moves from bucolic scenes to an increasingly industrial world\, represented not only on canvas\, but also on furniture\, ceramics\, glass\, and textiles from The Wolfsonian’s expansive collection. The Big World is co-curated by Wolfsonian chief curator Silvia Barisione and curator Lea Nickless. \nStarting with an ornate pastoral scene carved and painted onto the side of a grand piano\, the exhibition aims to upend visitors’ expectations of the landscape genre. “Preparing for The Big World\, we investigated the landscape holdings in The Wolfsonian’s collection and were surprised by the number and variety of works that we hold\,” Barisione said. “While many artists continued to find inspiration in nature\, the rapid urbanization and industrialization of the 20th century provided others with provocative new subjects.” \nThe exhibition documents how the artists’ responses to these new realities ranged from celebration and veneration to anxiety and ambivalence\, charting the story of modern landscape in three sections: \nThe Natural World – Mountains\, deserts\, forests\, and coastlines inspired art that expressed veneration and fantasy\, while other works celebrated the land as provider of sustenance. Paintings and decorative arts\, including a grand piano from the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair\, brought nature into the domestic world. \nThe Built Environment –Features of the built environment such as smokestacks\, dams\, bridges\, and skyscrapers elicited admiration from artists who were stirred by these monuments of modernity. But 20th-century landscape art also sounded the alarm about encroachments on nature from industrialization and urbanization. \nThe Battle for the Land – In contrast to the vitality of modern cities\, nature often appeared damaged and depleted in modern artworks with defoliated trees symbolizing harmful human impact. Ominous imagery of devasted cities and debris-littered vistas\, such as in Raymond Daussy’s painting La bataille pour la ville (The Battle for the City)\, offered artists a way to convey the traumatic experience and aftermath of the two world wars. \nThe Big World does not shy away from issues relevant today\, such as harmful impacts on nature\, whether from industrial development or warfare. At the same time\, visitors will be inspired to find beauty in the world around them\, not only in unspoiled vistas but also perhaps in the intersection of natural and human-made environments. \n  \n*Please visit the Wolfsonain’s website for exact dates and times URL:https://www.miamibeachfl.gov/event/the-wolfsonian-fiu-presents-the-big-world-alternative-landscapes-in-the-modern-era-92/2024-03-28/ LOCATION:The Wolfsonian–FIU\, 1001 Washington Avenue\, Miami Beach\, FL\, 33139\, United States CATEGORIES:Arts & Culture ORGANIZER;CN="The%20Wolfsonian-FIU":MAILTO:info@thewolf.fiu.edu END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20240328 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20240329 DTSTAMP:20240328T141503 CREATED:20231221T202315Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240104T181756Z UID:282864-1711584000-1711670399@www.miamibeachfl.gov SUMMARY:Oolite Arts presents Intracoastal Connections by A1A DESCRIPTION:Group Exhibition \nOn View: Dec. 9\, 2023  – May. 26\, 2024 \nOolite Arts Vitrine\, 924 Lincoln Rd. An internationally renowned Irish artist\, Clarke was commissioned in 1926 by the newly independent Irish Free State to create a window as a gift to the League of Nations in Geneva. The completed window was\, however\, rejected—labeled too provocative and “unrepresentative” of the Irish people. This new installation sheds light on the life and times of Harry Clarke\, the stories behind the window\, and the consequences of cultural censorship. The towering nude female sculpture\, which will be showcased on the East Coast for the first time ever\, first debuted at Burning Man and was designed by Marco Cochrane\, the artist behind monumental sculptures seen at the Smithsonian Art Museum and the $4.3 billion Resorts World. \n‘R-EvolutionTM’ will be on display on the 400 Block of Lincoln Road starting November 14 and will be on display through April 2024. \nThe ‘R-EvolutionTM’ sculpture symbolizes feminine strength and liberation\, featuring 16 motors in her chest to simulate breathing and demonstrate how her energy radiates into the world by involuntary forces. \nUsing a Pantograph – a medieval-era enlargement tool – the sculpture was built by hand by Marco using classical sculpting techniques starting with a life-size original\, enlarged first to 15 foot clay version\, and then to her final metal form. The completed 45 foot sculpture is made of steel rod and tubing\, utilizing two layers of geodesic triangles (necessitating 55\,000 welds) covered by a stainless steel mesh. \n‘R-EvolutionTM’ is the third and final sculpture in Cochrane’s “The Bliss Project” series\, intended to catalyze social change by challenging bystanders to see past the sexual charge surrounding the female body. To actualize the series\, Cochrane worked with singer\, songwriter\, dancer\, model\, humanitarian and farmer Deja Solis as a collaborator and model and called upon hundreds of volunteers to take part in the creation. Sessions and artists are TBD\, but will be updated regularly. Stay tuned\, stop by. \nOolite Arts presents Amidst Twin Suns\, the first solo exhibition of Miami-based artist Alberto Checa. Production is a key idiom in Checa’s work\, appearing literally among work titles and as gestured through his performances – posed as hypothesis\, rather than conclusion\, divorcing its concept from capitalist expectations. In such ways\, Checa’s productions reject the status of idol\, often re-used to aid future performances or recycled. Instead\, process takes the place of product\, ultimately dissolving the function of labor systems as we know it and reimagining these methods beyond their mechanical wrath. A new kind of choreography emerges in Checa’s abstract systems of production\, and a new way of understanding labor is ushered in. Amidst Checa’s performances are propositions of new possibilities of being\, building and protecting.
