The project is funded by both a United States Forest Service Urban and Community Forest Grant and 2018 G.O. Bond to plant approximately 600 trees along the entire seven (7) mile stretch in 2024. Additionally, the project will contribute to the City&#8217;s goal of increasing the tree canopy from 17% to 22%.<\/p>\n<p>An additional consideration for the project includes preserving the historic viewshed of the Beachwalk and using these needed trees to fill spaces that have been identified as gaps and under the threat of extreme heat. Minimizing conflict and impact to the ocean view from private properties through the Beachwalk was a strategic priority during the surveying process of potential tree installation locations.<\/p>\n<p>The Beachwalk was surveyed and all trees were selected to incorporate native or Florida Friendly species already acclimated to maritime hammock and dune environments resistant to inundation with high tolerance to salt and wind. The proposed planting locations are specific to the allowance of space in the dunes with consideration for building viewsheds along the Beachwalk. The trees will create canopy in areas where it is needed most in areas of the Beachwalk with low canopy.<\/p>\n<p>After conducting an extensive public feedback period, the City&#8217;s Urban Forester and a contracted Public Information Officer will be meeting with property owners along the Beachwalk over the coming months upon request. If you have already requested a meeting, you will soon be contacted to schedule an on-site meeting to incorporate your feedback. The City remains open to adjusting the location and species of the trees to provide shade and complement the dune ecosystem. The 2023 season also brought the first ever heat warning in recorded history. These figures are expected to rise; the recent 6th National Climate Risk Assessment report on heat estimates that Miami-Dade County should expect about 91 days with a heat index of 100 degrees or more by 2053. Planting shade for the future is important in cities like ours\u00a0with a lot of pavement and buildings.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\" tabindex=\"-1\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-2\">Where will this project take place?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<button type=\"button\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-2\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-2\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>Trees will be planted on both sides of the Beachwalk from North Beach Oceanside Park to South Pointe Pier.\u00a0The project will be organized in sections to be determined later after reviewing resident suggestions during the public comment period. Special care in the implementation of this project will be addressed to maintain the usability of the Beachwalk throughout the duration of the project.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\" tabindex=\"-1\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-3\">What are the planned maintenance procedures for the trees?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<button type=\"button\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-3\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-3\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>The City of Miami Beach will perform routine annual maintenance on the trees in areas where the City currently maintains the general landscaping- generally east of the Beachwalk- and includes annual trimming.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\" tabindex=\"-1\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-4\">What inspired the creation and development of this project?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<button type=\"button\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-4\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-4\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Residents&#8217; Request for Shade:<\/strong> Many expressed a desire for more shade on the Beachwalk. Trees not only beautify the environment but also provide essential shade, making outdoor areas more comfortable for everyone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Addressing Rising Temperatures:<\/strong> As temperatures continue to rise the need for effective heat mitigation strategies becomes critical. Planting trees helps combat heat and contributes to overall environmental resilience.<\/p>\n<p>The project aims to make Beachwalk greener, cooler, and more pleasant for the community.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\" tabindex=\"-1\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-5\">What criteria were used to develop the tree palette?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<button type=\"button\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-5\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-5\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>The Dune Management Plan (DMP) is overseen by the Environment and Sustainability Department. The City has authorization by the State to manage the dune system. The diverse palette includes trees recommended by the State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection Dune Management Plan\/ and Institute of Regional Conservation through their research publications.\u00a0 The tree will include trees found throughout Florida and the Caribbean. The City&#8217;s certified arborists anticipate that the trees will not reach full height due to environmental constraints such as heat, sand, daily light to heavy salt spray, wind, and storms.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\" tabindex=\"-1\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-6\">What is the history of this project?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<button type=\"button\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-6\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-6\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>The project was approved by the GOB Committee and the City Commission twice. This project has been conceived since at least 2021 based on the requests for shade along the Beachwalk.\u00a0 The shade trees were designed to complement the new Beachwalk since much vegetation was removed during that project.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\" tabindex=\"-1\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-7\">Will viewsheds be impacted for waterfront properties?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<button type=\"button\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-7\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-7\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>The city has taken special consideration to preserve the historic viewshed of the Beachwalk wherever possible. Minimizing conflict and impact to the ocean view from private properties through the Beachwalk was a strategic priority during the surveying process of potential tree installation locations.<\/p>\n<p>The Beachwalk is currently vegetated with\u00a0palms, sea grapes, and other trees. Several properties already have private landscaping that is comparable to the heights of the new trees when mature. The project aims to provide shade for walkers and bikers in regions with limited shade, rather than creating a dense tree canopy. Most condo units are high enough to look over the dunes, existing and proposed trees.<\/p>\n<p>Staff are willing to meet with any property owners who may have\u00a0concerns about the proposed plantings adjacent to their building.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<a role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\" tabindex=\"-1\"  id=\"fl-accordion--label-8\">How were residents notified of this project?<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<button type=\"button\" id=\"fl-accordion--icon-8\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"fl-accordion--panel-8\"><i>Expand<\/i><\/button>\n\t\t\t\t\t<p>With respect to outreach, the City has provided project information to the public via the following channels:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mailed 16,000 postcard fliers<\/strong> to each building unit fronting the Beachwalk.
