John Elizabeth Alemán has been a resident of Miami Beach for more than twenty-one years. She is married to Jose Braulio (JB) Alemán, and their two sons are fourth-generation Miami Beach residents.
A native Floridian, John was born in Tampa and raised in Sarasota. John’s mother is the original “Girl named John.” Her mother was a special education teacher who died unexpectedly when John was 14 years old. John's maternal grandfather, Dr. William Fitts, promised his World War II buddy and fellow Army medic to name his second child in his memory. John's parents chose to continue this legacy and named their second child, also a girl, the same way. John is proud of her name as result of this tradition and she and her husband continue the legacy.
John earned her Bachelors of Science in Business Administration with High Honors specializing in Finance in 1990 from the University of Florida. She is a member of the Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity.
John is an accomplished business professional and an active member of our community. Her 25-year corporate career in information technology was spent at public companies Accenture, Ryder System and MasTec. At Ryder, she managed 70 IT professionals across the UK, Germany, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, China and Singapore, and a $30M capital budget. As the Chief Information Officer at MasTec, she identified $500K operating savings within her first 30 days. John has 15 years’ experience developing solutions in the field of transportation and logistics.
John met her future husband, a Miami native and Cuban-American, in 1994 on her first day on the job at Ryder. They bought their Alton Road home right before they married in 2000.
John has been active in her children’s’ schools, including serving as President of the North Beach Elementary PTA, and is a strong supporter of public school education. John was honored to be recognized for her impact and results by being named “Miami-Dade County PTA President of the Year” while at North Beach Elementary. John served as Chairwoman of the City of Miami Beach Quality Education Committee and on the Board of the Miami-Dade County Council of PTA/PTSAs.
In John Alemán, Miami Beach has a Commissioner with deep ties to our community, with the qualifications and experience to advocate for residents, with a track record of real results in business and in our schools, and the right motivation to make sure our city remains a great place to live.
John is a dedicated and committed resident who wants to keep Miami Beach a wonderful place to live, raise children, play and work so that in the future her sons can establish their own roots and remain proud residents of this special city.
