Miami Beach Continues to Grow its Urban Tree Canopy

(Miami Beach, FL) Jul 19, 2021 -

Miami-Dade County’s Neat Streets Miami Program has awarded the City of Miami Beach $34,500 to fund the planting of canopy trees in the Normandy Shores neighborhood. Leveraging matching funds from the city’s General Obligation Bond Reforestation Project, this project will provide an additional 100 native, canopy trees to the area. This year’s Neat Streets Miami grant will fund the planting of 59 of the new trees. The project is set to begin this week.

“We’re excited to be working with Neat Streets Miami for a fifth consecutive year,” shared Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber. “With their help, we continue to grow our tree canopy that is key in attaining our goal of building a more beautiful and walkable city.”

In addition to creating cooler streets, a prosperous tree canopy also intercepts thousands of gallons of urban stormwater runoff, reduces carbon monoxide, conserves electricity and improves overall health for residents.

Trees that will be planted under the partnership with Neat Streets include Bahamian tabebuia (Tabebuia bahamensis), crabwood (gymnanthes lucide), Strangler fig (ficus aurea), calophyllum (calophyllum brasilience), and several other native and Florida-friendly species as a part of the larger project.

This grant is made possible through the Miami-Dade County Tree Trust Fund. Projects are prioritized based on locations with low tree canopy and low-to-moderate income populations.
