Art Week Events Position Miami Beach at Epicenter of Art World

(Miami Beach, FL) Nov 29, 2021 -

All eyes will be on Miami Beach from Nov. 29 – Dec. 5 as the urban island once again becomes the center of the art world with the annual Art Week Miami Beach.

“Art Week is an annual event like no other – the global convergence of art producers and afficionados in one of the most beautiful places on the planet,” said Mayor Dan Gelber. “Miami Beach is proud and excited to once again host this incredible gathering of top contemporary artists, galleries, and collectors and show why we are a year-round arts and culture destination.”

This year’s events feature new installments of the popular Art Basel Miami Beach (Dec. 2-4) with 4,000 artists from the world’s leading galleries on display at the newly renovated Miami Beach Convention Center as well as the city-curated No Vacancy, which matches 10 artists with 10 iconic Miami Beach hotels in a juried competition that features $25,000 in prizes, including a $5,000 public prize by the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau and a $20,000 juried prize to be decided by local art experts. Winners will be announced on Dec. 9.

Art Week Miami Beach will also feature diverse programming from monumental temporary public art installations by FriendsWithYou, Carlos Betancourt and the increasingly popular Miami Beach Legacy Purchase Program.

Art Outside Miami Beach is a public art exhibition curated by The Bass in collaboration with Art in Public Places to bring residents and visitors the opportunity to see and experience a network of public art throughout Miami Beach, including works by Elmgreen and Dragset, Joep Van Lieshout, Abraham Cruzvillegas, Zanele Muholi, Ugo Rondinone, Franz Ackermann, Jim Drain, Dan Graham, Sylvie Fleury, Lawrence Weiner, Bill Fontana and Susan Philipsz, among others.

The Miami Beach Legacy Purchase Program continues with Art Basel Miami Beach galleries participating in the 2021 Nova and Positions sectors. The program seeks to strategically expand Miami Beach’s public art collection by purchasing works that are aligned with the curatorial direction of the city’s existing collection and represent international artistic excellence as well as an investment value for the city’s Art in Public Places (“AiPP”) collection.

This year, the AiPP Committee will select three artworks to be offered for a public vote via online social channels (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter) at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30. Voting will be open for 24 hours and will close at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 1. City officials will announce the results of the voting on Thursday, Dec. 2, with the winning artwork(s) being purchased by the city shortly thereafter.

Two temporary public art projects commissioned through Miami Beach OnStage! Will be displayed along Española Way. The installations are designed to guide and engage residents and visitors from Ocean Drive to the Drexel Avenue corridor. Artist collective FriendsWithYou will debut “Little Cloud Sky” (2021) on the east end of Española Way. The work was created to transport the viewer to a happy and joyful place. According to the artists, the little aerial clouds “will travel with you everywhere you go.”

On the west end of Española Way, Miami Beach art scene pioneer Carlos Betancourt, in collaboration with Alberto Latorre, created “Milagros!,” an ephemeral installation inspired by an old folk custom traceable to ancient Iberians who inhabited the coastal regions of Spain. The artwork includes hundreds of charms, presented as symbols of devotion, hope and healing.

Miami Beach Trolley

Due to an expected high number of visitors, the city encourages residents and visitors to move around town using the free citywide Miami Beach Trolley, which will have enhanced service for the duration of Art Week to reduce waiting times.. Trolleys will run on their regular schedule, Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to midnight and on Sunday from 8 a.m. to midnight.

The city will be offering Art Week Ambassadors on Thursday, Dec. 2 through Sunday, Dec. 5 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at trolley stops located along Washington Avenue at 10 Street, Española Way and 18 Street as well as on Convention Center Drive and 18 Street. These cultural guides will offer residents and visitors information on the various Art Week art fairs, insight to the exhibits, maps on how the Miami Beach Trolley can get them there quickly and comfortably, and fun facts about the city.

Invited to work with Snap’s advanced augmented reality team to expand upon his multi-disciplinary practice, Israel has created five augmented reality (AR) experiences, each linked to one of his “Self-Portrait” paintings. “Five Lenses,” unleashed in your smartphone, overlay Snap’s groundbreaking AR onto Israel’s physical works to give viewers an entirely new experience. Extending from Collins Avenue along the central promenade of the park leading up to the museum entrance, Agua Dulce by Abraham Cruzvillegas, a large-scale sculptural installation, encompasses nearly 14,000 square feet.
