Miami Beach Hispanic Community Center

Organizational Background

The G.O. Bond for Arts & Culture will be providing much needed funding to allow the historic home of the Miami Beach Hispanic Community Center to be restored, re-opened and resume its cultural programming showcasing Hispanic music, art, literature, and culture.

The Miami Beach Hispanic Community Center is located in the historic Coral Rock House, one of the City’s two remaining structures clad in natural coral rock and the only one entirely intact and historically restored. Built in 1934 and designed by architect George Pfeiffer, this historic landmark was originally located on 77th street and Collins Avenue and was scheduled for demolition to make way for new construction. In order to facilitate the building’s preservation, UNIDAD of Miami Beach, Inc. entered into an agreement with the then Owner to acquire the house and purchase a lot at 1701 Normandy Drive, subject to the then Owner’s successful relocation of the historic structure. After successful relocation, UNIDAD of Miami Beach, Inc. acquired the house, new lot, and fully restored both the exterior and interiors of this treasured historic landmark and re-opened it to the public in 1997 as the permanent home of the Miami Beach Hispanic Community Center. In addition to its regular cultural programming, the Miami Beach Hispanic Community Center also is home to the Miami Beach Hispanic Art Collection and Historical Archives.
