— Debbie Tackett is one of the foremost authorities on the city’s architectural heritage—
Miami Beach, FL – Veteran Miami Beach planner Debbie Tackett has been named director of the Miami Beach Planning Department. She replaces Thomas Mooney, who retired this month.
“Debbie’s knowledge and understanding of the city’s architectural heritage is second to none,” shared Miami Beach City Manager Eric Carpenter. “Her more than 20 years of experience with the city in varying positions has made her the ideal person to serve in this critical role.”
As director, Tackett will review proposed construction projects for conformance to the city’s land use requirements, particularly in the case of applicants seeking to improve a property, construct a new building or demolish an existing one.
The 27-member Planning Department also makes recommendations to the Miami Beach City Commission on proposed changes to better align city regulations with objectives such as increasing resilience or providing more affordable housing.
“I'm excited for this job because I really do think that I can make some improvements,” shared Tackett, who previously served as the city’s chief historic preservation and architecture officer as well as its preservation and design manger. “We have a wealth of historic and contemporary buildings in Miami Beach that make our city unique. An important part of my role is protecting the city’s character for future generations.”
Tackett’s appointment was unanimously accepted by the Miami Beach City Commission.
