Miami Beach Suspends Red-Light Cameras for Right Turns

Miami Beach, FL – Responding to an increasing number of complaints from residents, the Miami Beach City Commission voted to immediately suspend the use of red-light cameras to enforce violations related to motorists making right turns on red.

The change does not affect enforcement at the intersection of 17 Street and Alton Road, where right turn on red is always prohibited and automated enforcement will continue.

“It has been frustrating to see Miami Beach residents receive red light camera citations even when the images showed their vehicles braking at a red light before turning,” said Miami Beach Commissioner Alex Fernandez who sponsored the measure. “At a time when we’re working to improve affordability and quality of life, these citations have cost residents valuable time appealing their cases and, in many instances, more than $180 in penalties.”

Florida law requires motorists to come to a complete stop before making a right turn on red.

“Public safety will always be our first priority. The Commission acted responsibly by suspending the camera enforcement for certain right turns while maintaining safeguards against drivers who disregard red lights altogether,” said Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner. “Our police officers will continue to enforce the law when they observe illegal right turns.”

The City Commission voted to continue automated enforcement for vehicles that proceed straight through red lights.
