independence
The Office of Inspector General was created as the result of a citywide referendum held on November 6, 2018, when 81% of Miami Beach voters approved an amendment to the City Charter. The amendment specifies that the office is an independent body, i.e., that it is not subject to the direction of the City Administration or City Commission.
The Inspector General is appointed by a special outside committee, subject to approval of the appointment of the City Commission, and may not be removed from office except upon a 5/7 vote of the Commission. The office may not be abolished except by amendment to the City Charter.
