Acclaimed multimedia artist James Allister Sprang creates audiovisual poems that celebrate the sensorial experience of Black life, considering his relationship to diasporic timelines. His work combines image, language and sound to explore themes of rest, joy and survival.

James Allister Sprang is a graduate of the Cooper Union (BFA) and the University of Pennsylvania (MFA). He has completed over 20 residencies domestically and internationally.

His work has been shown and/or performed at institutions such as The Brooklyn Museum, TATE Museum, PAFA Museum, The Aldrich Museum, The Institute for Contemporary Art (Maine), The Kitchen, Storm King Art Center, The Public Theater, Baryshnikov Arts Center, the Concertgebouw (NL), David Nolan Gallery, The Apollo Theater and Pioneer Works.

He was awarded the Knight Foundation Art + Tech Fellowship(2022-23), the Pew Fellowship (2023-25), the Montalvo Arts International Music & Composition Fellowship (2024-26), and the Lincoln Center Collider Fellowship (2025-26). His work has been covered by prominent media outlets such as Art in America, Art Papers, and The Observer
