Miami Beach Celebrates Earth Month

for immediate release

—A series of environmentally friendly events take place in April —

Miami Beach, FL – Join the City of Miami Beach during the month of April for an entire series of events to mark Earth Month.

“Strengthening our infrastructure and protecting the natural environment that defines Miami Beach go hand in hand,” said Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner. “Earth Month reinforces that resilience, public safety, and sustainability are not optional — they are priorities we are advancing every day.”

One of the most popular events — Turtle Fest — is back for a fourth year on Saturday, April 25 from 3-6 p.m. to mark the annual start of sea turtle season. The event takes place in Altos Del Mar Park. The annual sea turtle nesting season in Miami Beach begins on April 1 (one month earlier than other parts of Florida) and runs through Oct. 31.

Turtle Fest also marks the start of the city’s annual Flip the Switch campaign to reduce the use of artificial lighting along the beachfront. Harsh lighting confuses sea turtle hatchlings, leading them to mistakenly crawl toward the artificial lights instead of the ocean. The campaign is intended to educate property owners, managers, residents and visitors about precautions they can take to avoid disturbing sea turtles during their annual nesting season.
