Miami Beach, FL – Two days before it hosts this year’s annual Veterans Day parade and festivities, the City of Miami Beach, in partnership with the Miami Beach Garden Club and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 3559, will honor those who served – and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country – in a solemn Blue and Gold Star Memorial Marker dedication on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 3 p.m. in Canopy Park (701 West Ave.).

“These markers will remind everyone who visits Canopy Park of the brave men and women who put their lives at risk for the freedoms that we continue to enjoy today,” shared Miami Beach Commissioner Alex Fernandez, who championed the dedication.

The Blue Star Program of the National Garden Clubs honors all men and women who have served in the U.S. military while the organization works with Gold Star Families to honor fallen heroes through Gold Star Markers. Both types of Markers have been mounted on a keystone for permanent display in Canopy Park.

“Freedom is not a gift we inherit, it’s a duty we defend. Our servicemen and women remind us that courage, discipline, and sacrifice are what keep America strong,” said Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner. “In Miami Beach we honor their legacy by safeguarding law and order, standing tall for our values, and ensuring our residents enjoy the safe, vibrant quality of life they deserve.”

Canopy Park is believed to hold the first Gold Star Marker in Miami-Dade County. The first Gold Star Monument in the county is located at the Miami-Dade Military Museum and Memorial.

“VFW Post 3559 is honored to see these markers placed in the heart of our community,” added Jackie Tam, Commander of VFW Post 3559. “Located directly across the street from our Post, these markers hold deep significance for our members and the community we serve. They will stand as a lasting testament to the courage of our service members and the immeasurable sacrifices of Gold Star Families.”

Sunday’s dedication ceremony will include a bagpipe procession and trumpeter, remarks by local dignitaries and special guests, as well as participation by members of VFW Post 3559.
