Fire Flow Project Packages

The City is replacing old, aging water pipes with new, larger pipes to improve fire flow. Over time, older pipes can deteriorate, limiting the amount of water available to fight fires. Upgrading these pipes ensures a more reliable water supply for both firefighting and everyday use, while also reducing the risk of leaks and breaks that can disrupt service.

Upgrading the water system directly benefits residents by enhancing fire protection, ensuring consistent water pressure throughout the neighborhood, and modernizing the infrastructure. This means your home and community will be safer in the event of a fire, and routine water service will be more reliable.

While temporary water shut-offs may be necessary, the City will provide advance notice so residents can plan accordingly. Efforts will be made to minimize interruptions, and work schedules are coordinated to reduce inconvenience. In many cases, service disruptions are brief and managed carefully to maintain access to water.

You may notice temporary discoloration or slight cloudiness when water lines are flushed or turned back on. This is a normal part of the process and does not pose a health risk. The City ensures that water remains safe and meets all regulatory standards, and discoloration usually clears within a short time.

Larger pipes can carry more water to fire hydrants during emergencies, which is critical for protecting homes and businesses. They also improve overall water flow and pressure for everyday use, reducing the likelihood of low-pressure issues in the system.

The Fire Flow Projects 1 & 2 are planned for completion between Summer 2025 and Summer 2026. The exact duration of work in any particular neighborhood depends on the complexity of the area, weather conditions, and unforeseen challenges. Residents should expect work in their area to last several weeks to a few months.

There is no immediate increase in water rates planned as a result of this project. The upgrades are part of the City’s ongoing capital improvement plan, which focuses on long-term infrastructure, safety and reliability.

Funding comes from the City’s planned capital improvement budgets and bond funding, which allows for large-scale infrastructure improvements without imposing direct costs on residents. This approach ensures essential upgrades are completed responsibly and sustainably.

Safety is a top priority. The City will implement detours, signage, barriers, and flaggers to guide both vehicle and foot traffic safely around construction zones. Work areas will be clearly marked, and residents are encouraged to follow posted instructions to minimize risks.
