Miami Beach, FL – The City of Miami Beach is honored to welcome home EMS Chief David Sola, Lt. Ivan Chavez and Lt. Peter Darley from an eight-day deployment to Venezuela following two massive earthquakes in the South American nation. Miami Beach firefighters conducted critical search-and-rescue operations to locate survivors and support communities in recovering bodies from a sea of rubble. The late June earthquakes claimed thousands of lives and left thousands more unaccounted for.

"The deployment of our Miami Beach firefighters to Venezuela reflects the highest ideals of public service and civic duty," said Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner. "Their selflessness, professionalism and steadfast resolve in assisting a nation in crisis embody the values that define Miami Beach. We take great pride in their service and reaffirm our commitment to supporting the people of Venezuela throughout the long-term recovery process.”

All three men exhibited extraordinary courage and selfless service as part of the South Florida Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Urban Search & Rescue Task Force 2. Their willingness to answer the call beyond our city’s borders reflects the very best of the Miami Beach Fire Department and exemplifies an unwavering commitment to protect lives and serve communities at home and abroad.

According to Venezuelan officials, the earthquakes claimed approximately 3,811 lives, injured more than 16,740 people and impacted over 26,000 individuals.

“In the face of such a devastating event, every trained rescuer makes a difference. These firefighters answered that call with courage and compassion when it was needed most,” said Miami Beach Fire Chief Digna Abello. “Their service is a source of tremendous pride for our department and for the City of Miami Beach.”

The city would also like to recognize Firefighter Michael Saavedra, who independently traveled to Venezuela at his own expense to deliver donations and provide assistance to those affected. His generosity and compassion in helping others embodies the spirit of the fire service and further demonstrates the commitment of Miami Beach firefighters to serving those in need.
