Miami Beach Emergency Management offers the FEMA-sponsored Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training. Following a large-scale emergency, professional first responders may not be immediately available as they are tasked with multiple priorities. Through CERT training, individuals and organizations learn life-saving response skills to help each other until professionals arrive.

If you are interested in volunteering with the City of Miami Beach in any capacity (following a disaster or not) you are required to complete the CERT course.
CERT training is offered as a series of classes that total 24 hours, including a simulated disaster drill. Completion of all modules is necessary to obtain certification. The course is offered in a hybrid format. Eight (8) hours of the course can be completed online through independent study, followed by two 8-hour sessions of hands-on training.

- Hazard Identification & Disaster Preparedness
- Response Team Organization and Communication
- Fire Safety and Suppression
- Light Search and Rescue
- Simple Triage and Rapid Treatment
- Disaster Medical Operations
- Terrorism Awareness
- Disaster Psychology and Emotional Impacts
- Comprehensive Final Drill

The Miami Beach Division of Emergency Management works with residents, homeowners associations, civic groups, nonprofits, faith-based organizations and houses of worship, and businesses to strenghthen the level of emergency preparedness. Staff from the Division of Emergency Management as well as Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers are available to deliver emergency preparedness presentations to community organizations and homeowners asociations, work with businesses/honprofits and staff emergency preparedness exhibits at local events.
