South Beach, or SoBe, spanning along Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean has a long, storied history in film and media. With the photogenic MacArthur Causeway, picturesque Venetian Causeway and largest collection of Art Deco Architecture, this small chic neighborhood is known and recognized worldwide. In 1964, Muhammad Ali / Cassius Clay brought international attention to SoBe with his famous 5th Street Gym and infamous upset fight with Sonny Liston in the Miami Beach Convention Center. In 1966, The Jackie Gleason Show, a popular New York-based television series, moved to Miami Beach, for the warmer temperatures of South Florida. In ’67, the “King of Rock & Roll” hopped in a race car and shot scenes for his musical Clambake around the MacArthur Causeway. Moving on to the 1980s, productions such as Miami Vice ushered in a wave of slick, colorful neo-noire film which captivated international audiences. With a vibe reflecting the extravagant taste of the 80s and popularity of MTV, SoBe and Ocean Drive were culturally transformed from the “Fun & Sun Capital of the World” to magnets for film, advertising, fashion, art and culture.
SoBe's charisma continues with films such as The Birdcage, the Bad Boys trilogy, television shows such as The Assassination of Gianni Versace, Burn Notice and Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Music videos by the likes of Drake, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, the Jonas Brothers, and Ed Sheeran have filmed in various locations throughout SoBe. Miami Beach's legacy of being an international center of pop culture endures.
