Bereavement Leave
Bereavement leave pertains to a death in the immediate family and is granted as follows:
- Unclassified Employees: Up to five (5) days of bereavement leave with pay in the event of the death of an immediate family member. Immediate family is defined as spouse, registered domestic partner, children, stepchildren, adopted children, mother, father, sister, brother, stepsister, stepbrother, grandmother, grandfather, grandchildren, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, and any person in the general family whose ties would normally be considered immediate family and who is living with the same household (proof may be required.) Up to two (2) days shall be allowed for the death of any other relative not listed as an immediate family member. Additional time off may be granted by the Department Head, in writing, chargeable to the employee’s accrued sick or vacation leave. The employee’s payroll coordinator shall utilize Munis reason code L060 (code description: Bereavement) when the employee elects to use their own accrued sick or vacation leave. All bereavement leave is to be taken no later than 180 days after the death of the family member occurs.
